Stitch to Seed
In a new commission, artist Alice-Marie Archer explores how we can combine traditional craft, plant science and gardening to collectively create textiles that care for the planet.
Informed by in-depth research into Scottish knitting traditions and indigenous plants, Archer has designed a knitted geotextile quilt which provides the ideal environment for plants to take root. Embedded with seeds, it can be applied to an area of land to encourage soil restoration, like a healing blanket for the earth.
Inspired by Archer’s work, a community quilt will grow throughout the Garden Futures exhibition. Through these Knit & Natter workshops, a seeded quilt will be created and will later be planted along the Dighty Burn. This collaborative act of making and planting becomes a living legacy for the exhibition—nurturing biodiversity and connecting community through shared care for the environment.
